New Harvest Extra Virgin Olive Oils - 2011

Every year in winter, the anticipation for the new season's olive oils is at its peak. This is the time when our producers carefully pick the olives off their trees and head to the olive mills to release from the olives their golden green juice: the New Oil, or olio nuovo. It is an exciting and anxious moment for the producers who have carefully tended the groves for an entire year, hoping their annual crop would once again be a success! And for us, we anticipate the reward of their hard work, and the moment we can sample one of nature's most remarkable gifts, while in it's freshest state. Our northern hemisphere olive oil producers harvest their olives only between the months of September and December every year, and as a result, fresh oils are a rare find and a real treat.

On this page, we have listed our 2011 harvest extra virgin olive oils, and we will be updating this selection regularly as more of the new oils become available. Enjoy the Freshness!

Description: Zei is an exceptional mono varietal olive oil that comes to us from Turkey’s well-known Ayvalik region, along the country’s North East Aegean coast, at the edge of the Edremit Gulf. For centuries this region has been recognized for its production of some of the Aegean’s finest olive oils. The Ayvalik terroir, comprised of the area’s soil composition, elevation, its slopes, and the northern and eastern winds (Poyraz and Imbat), combine magically to impart a distinct flavour profile to the Ayvalik olive varietal. The Ayvalik olives for Zei are harvested early in the season, while they are still green and are beginning to change to purple. This ensures the unique flavour profile of this sought-after varietal is preserved at its optimal state. This year’s harvest occurred in November of 2010 and is a result of organic and traditional farming practices. The Zei tin (2009Harvest) also carries a special holographic seal issued by the Ayvalik Chamber of Commerce, assuring the authenticity of this olive oil’s geographic source.

Acidity: 0.69% to 0.72%

Tasting Profile: Zei Extra Virgin Olive Oil has a very pleasant and fresh fragrance that clearly speaks of the fruit it comes from - the olive! On the palate, Zei is very smooth with slight fruity and floral notes, a hint of arugula, and ending with a very mild peppery finish. We find Zei to be a very versatile olive oil that is well suited to a variety of meals. Ideal over leafy salads and tomato or cucumbers, this oil also works very well over hot dishes of all types, stewed vegetable meals, and grilled seafood. Zei is also a fantastic bread-dipper!
