Athinoelia Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Harvest: 2022
Country / Region: Greece
Intensity: Medium
Description: Produced in the Greek province of Lakonia, a region in the southeastern part of the Peloponnese peninsula, the Athinoelia is rare, but also considered one of the oldest varieties in Greece. It has a very smooth and balanced flavour profile, and is often combined with the better-known Greek variety, the Koroneiki, to create a unique and distinct olive oil. Here however, we are able to experience the Athinoelia in its complete beauty: as a single varietal, pure, and divine! This is an early harvest example from Greece, harvested in early October; this variety matures slowly and is typically collected in late December through January. The Oleocanthal content for this oil measures at 112ppm.
Tasting Profile / Serving Suggestions: This early harvest Greek variety is creamy and displays notes of baking spice and green almond with a Szechuan peppercorn finish. The lingering spicy mouth feel and slight astringency are the result of healthy Oleocanthal content of 112ppm, comprising 30% of the total phenol content. This is a stunning example of the Athinoelia varietal and it is sure to please.
